Friends,

As we all know, "things change." And never more so than on the Web. Emily and I have rejiggered things so that a new site presents our book/CD "seminar-in-a-box" and other vacation rental-releated offerings. It's www.fullybookedrentals.com.

This site (www.firecrystal.com) presents our combined curricula vitae, in case someone might want to commission us to write something for them.

All the best,

Alfred Glossbrenner

Worldwide Headquarters of FireCrystal Communications

Quick Handle:

I'm Alfred Glossbrenner, and my wife, Emily, and I are FireCrystal Communications. We are among the world's leading experts in interviewing individuals or groups to draw out of them what they know or what they want to say, helping them define what they want to accomplish, and then creating a communications solution that will hit the mark with their target audiences, regardless of medium..

We've been doing this for decades, and we are very, very good at it—as the selected, representative samples of our work presented below will show.

Between us, Emily and I have over 45 years of experience serving the communications needs of clients ranging from small ad agencies and multi-media/training firms to Fortune 500 corporations:

Any subject, any medium—on time and on budget!

“Surely you jest!”

Well, no. When I was a freshly-minted college grad pounding the pavements of New York looking for work, and so relieved to be out of Ohio, I had nothing to show. No reel. No portfolio. Nothing. (I wanted to become a science fiction writer and managed to bluff my way into the offices of several leading editors—Ben Bova, Judy Lynn DelRay, and others.)

Now, I have more samples than I can reasonably ask anyone to look at. I'm very proud that I've earned my living by writing and, only by writing. And I'm thrilled to be living the dream of collaborating each day with my wife and best friend of nearly three decades.

It really isn’t an exaggeration to say that Emily and I as FireCrystal Communications can bring our unique touch to fulfilling any and all of your communications needs. We listen intently. We interview in-depth. And we are intimately familiar with the communications options and technology available. We also have a cadre of many talented freelance associates to draw upon.

Education and Personal Background

Culver Military Academy Woodcraft Camp and Summer Naval School, 1960-1969. (3 stars, bronze tuxis; 7 stars, silver tuxis; 3 stars gold tuxis). Student and counselor.

Other summer jobs included: laborer at the Sugardale ham factory in Canton, Ohio, “foreground” operator for an IBM 360 mainframe at the Canton-based data center of the Timken Company, and sailing master at the Seal Harbor Yacht Club on Mt. Desert Island, Maine.

Princeton University, A.B. in English Literature, 1972. Class Poet, Debate Panel, University Cottage Club. Senior thesis on modern fantasy and science fiction, which required special departmental permission. (Star Wars was still five years in the future. This was really my first “book.”)

Media Networks, Inc., 1974-1975. Market manager, magazine space salesperson, and copywriter (Time, Newsweek, U.S News, and Sports Illustrated). MNI was funded by 3M. The company was able to drop saddle-stitched pages into local editions of major magazines on the basis of zip code, giving local companies the prestige of advertising in national magazines.

The Scribner Book Store, Fifth Avenue
(Please click for more on this magnificient building.)

The Scribner Book Stores, Inc., 1973-1974. Sales clerk and business book buyer.

Dutton, 1980

St. Martin's Press, 1983

FireCrystal Communications, 1975-present.

FireCrystal became a two-person firm after Emily Glossbrenner left IBM to join the team. (Emily is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wilson College.) By enlisting the skills of fellow freelance professionals and drawing on our own sensibilities and experience, we can help you define your communications goals and figure out the best way to accomplish them.

For example, we envision and supervise the creation of Web sites (WorldMetaView), and we use our interviewing skills to draw out a client and deliver precisely the content he or she wants.

We arrange for the printing, indexing, professional publication, and distribution of books. Debt and Delusion by Dr. Peter Warburton was one of Emily's projects, from start to finish. I won't go into all the problems she solved. But I will say that the book is a smashing success, selling about 45 units a month on Amazon, at $75 a copy.

Magazine and trade journal articles, books, brochures, flyers, print and radio ads, hardware and software documentation, press releases, telemarketing scripts, direct mail packages, focus group analysis, and instruction booklets—we’ve done it all, many times over. (In fact, we've written over 60 books with combined sales of over 1,000,000 copies.)

In 1983, I published one of the very first books explaining “the electronic universe” of online computer communications. It introduced the technique of using "tip boxes" outside the in-line text in computer books and sold over 186,000 copies. Many other titles about the online world followed, including several about the Internet that pre-dated the introduction of Mosaic, the common ancestor of both Netscape and IE.

As you might imagine, most of our work these days centers around scripts for Web-based training, DVD-based video presentations, and Web site conception and creation. But we are always open to additional media and opportunities.

If you have a moment to spend, you'll discover that FireCrystal Communications is an extraordinary firm with extraordinary talents and capabilities.

Web Sites—Copy and/or Design and Project Management

FireCrystal Communications has participated in the creation of scores of Web sites. At one end of the spectrum, we can act as both account executives and creative directors to interview the principals of a business to clarify what they want their site to accomplish.

We will then contract with a graphic designer and a Webmaster to create one or more prototypes and present them to you for comment and reaction. Once a design document has been approved, we will manage the project to completion and launch. An excellent example of this approach is the WorldMetaView site. The client had a notion of what he wanted—Emily and I turned it into a vision and then into a reality. We can also help promote a site once it has gone "live."

At the opposite end of the spectrum FireCrystal Communications can serve as just copywriters. The navigation may or may not have been previously determined. But what's needed is content for each page, and possibly suggestions for design and illustrations. Once again, we interview the principals and absorb any of their current printed or electronic materials. A good example of this approach is Apco Pools. We interviewed the husband and wife principals for two hours, selected several “before and after”photographs, and turned everything over to netStride, the firm that hired us. Please click here for a links page covering over a dozen of the Web sites we have helped create.

There is also the site we created for our own “seminar-in-a-box, book/CD package,”How to Make your Vacation Property Work for You! We did the copy. netStride did the coding, layout, and design.

Books

Since 1974, Emily and I have written or co-authored some 60 books covering topics that range from men’s gymnastics, bowling, and women’s track and field to the profession of information brokering (research professionals), managing hard disk drives, and finding shareware/freeware software. (Please click on one of these links for more information: Glossbrenner on Google and Alibris. St. Martin's Press also took out a full-page ad in the New York Times Book Review some years ago.) It might be quicker, however, if you just click here to view a pastiche of some of our book covers.

The common thread that unites all of our books is excellent research and interviewing skills. And insatiable curiosity. That's why we ask the questions most other writers don't. It's why we actually prefer to know absolutely nothing about a subject (other than our research) before interviewing someone about it. And it's why our work is always well reviewed.

Commercial publishing is in a “matematical death sprial,” according to our friend and former book packager, Michael Cader. I doubt that Emily and I will ever write or co-author another conventionally published book. The economics are simply terrible. Self-publishing and marketing your title via the Net is quite a different story.

Finally, if you love fiction of any sort, you'll love our commercial publishing swan song:

  • About the Author: The passionate reader’s guide to the authors you love, including things you never knew, juicy bits you’ll want to know, and hundreds of ideas for what to read next. Alfred and Emily Glossbrenner; Harcourt, 2000. For fiction lovers. The technical books paid the bills, but this one was our heart’s desire. Please click here for more information.

Our talent is working with clients to help generate ideas—and then implementing those ideas with style and grace—and something of a special touch—regardless of subject, regardless of medium.
